Dark Lover - J.R. Ward
Dark Lover is book 1 in J.R. Ward's 'Black Dagger Brotherhood' series. Set in New York, there is a fight for survival going on by the Vampires against the Slayers. The Slayers are humans who have given up their souls to kill Vampires and an elite band of Vamps (Black Dagger Brotherhood - BDB) fight them to protect the dwindling Vampire numbers from being made extinct.
The leader of the BDB is Wrath, the only pure bred Vampire left. Wrath is really the King of the Vamps but has been avoiding that role as he deems himself not worthy.
Vamps are like humans until they reach 25 - when they go through the 'Change' which is a hard process that not all survive. The 'Change' is even harder for half breeds (part human/part Vamp) to make it through.
Darius (one of the BDB) has a half breed daughter Beth who is nearing the 'Change' and he asks Wrath to help her make it through. Wrath, ever the loner, initially refuses. But something happens that makes him change his mind.
When Wrath meets Beth he falls in love. He needs to help her survive the 'Change', the Slayers trying to kill them and to understand the new life she will have to live.
This is a really good book, revealing the hidden depths to Wrath and the Brotherhood, their fight for survival as well as the love story that emerges. Like it so much that I have ordered the rest of the series and can't wait to read the stories for the rest of the BDB members!!

Dead Until Dark - Charlaine Harris
Dead Until Dark is the first book in the Sookie Stackhouse series. This book introduces us to Sookie, a telepath, who lives in the small town of Bon Temps, Louisiana.
After the Japanese manage to produce synthetic blood Vampires have 'come out' and are now living as legit citizens. When Sookie meets her first vampire, Bill Compton, she is thrilled to discover that his mind is closed and that she is unable to 'read' him. This gives her some much longed for peace.
Sookie falls in love with Bill in this book. We follow her as she meets more Vampires and learns about their ways as she adapts to as life with Bill.
There's another story going on in Dead Until Dark as there are several murders in Bon Temps and the Vampires are chief suspects! Sookie discovers who is responsible and her life is endangered as a result!
Add in to this that Sookie also discovers that her friend and boss Sam is another kind of supernatural! This story sets up the rest of the series very well. If you haven't read the
Sookie Stackhouse series yet - DO!!!

Dark Destiny - Christine Feehan
This was the first book I read in the 'Dark' series, in fact it was the first book I read by Christine Feehan. I purchased it on holiday unaware that it was part of a series! As you can see I was hooked after - hence the fact I am now working my way through all the books (in the correct order!!).
Dark Destiny is about Nicolae (Carpathian) and Destiny. Destiny's family was horrifically murdered by a vampire when she was young, she was kidnapped, brutalized and converted by him. During the years she suffered with the vampire she had a mind connection with Nicolae - who helped her survive and live through it.
Adult Destiny is the only female vampire hunter. After killing the vampire that captured her she went on a mission to hunt the rest. When Nicolae finally meets her he realises that she is his life mate but Destiny feels soiled and tainted by the vampire blood in her.
Nicolae is torn apart that he can't stop her feeling 'unclean' and save her from her emotional torment. This is another different love story by Feehan. Amongst this in Destiny's town vampires are gathering for a battle. Nicolae and Destiny must battle together to save the townsfolk that she has come to care about.
Do they succeed, does Destiny become emotionally whole again? Read it and see!!!

Dark Prince by Christine Feehan
This is the first book in the 'Dark' series by Christine Feehan. The series is about a race called the Carpathians, who live amongst us in secret. The Carpathians are in touch with nature, sleep in the ground, can shapeshift, live for thousands of years and must drink blood to survive. So what's the difference between them and vampires I hear you ask?!!
Well Carpathians mate for life - they have one 'life mate.' A male of the species loses the ability to see colours or feel emotions until he find his true 'life mate' - who is the light to his dark. Carpathian males who are not fortunate enough to find her eventually get overwhelmed by their dark side and turn into souless vampires with a frenzy for killing (humans and Carpathians alike).
This first book as about the leader of the Carpathians - Prince Mikhail Dubrinsky. He is getting closer to being overwhelmed by the dark side and is lonely a full of despair that his race will die out due to a lack of Carpathian females.
Raven Whitney is a human with psychic powers, she has used her talents to track down serial killers and is haunted by what she has seen in their minds. Mikhail and Raven's minds connect psychically. He has found his life mate....but she is human! Cue a love story like no other!
Be warned!!! This book is rather saucy!! I was gripped by it and am now starting book 2!! ;-)

Stolen by Kelley Armstrong
Stolen is book 2 in the Otherworld series and we continue with Elena who is back living with the pack.
Unfortunately she gets captured by scientists and is imprisioned along with other supernaturals. We now get introduced to some key characters and species from later books. Among those are Witches Paige and Savannah, half demons Xavier and Leah, Cassandra the vampire. Later books focus on other characters and stories...though they all remain interlinked. Don't worry this is not the last Elena book but the next two focus on Paige.
Elena needs to escape before Clay puts himself in danger coming to save her! The pack realise in this book that they need connections with other supernaturals instead of remaining in isolation.

Bitten by Kelley Armstrong
This is the first book in the Otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong. Kelley has created a world where we are unaware that living amongst us are witches, werewolves and other supernaturals.
Bitten is about Elena Michaels, she is the only female werewolf in existance. She is playing at being human away from her pack when we first meet her.
But when her pack leader, Jeremy, calls her back to help with an uprising she realises what and who she’s been missing.
This is a good book, it sets the scene for the rest of the series. Elena is a strong female character but there is also a love story here that we are unaware of at first. Once I read Bitten and the next book Stolen I was so hooked on the series that I ordered all the rest of the books!!
