Dark Lover - J.R. Ward

Dark Lover is book 1 in J.R. Ward's 'Black Dagger Brotherhood' series. Set in New York, there is a fight for survival going on by the Vampires against the Slayers. The Slayers are humans who have given up their souls to kill Vampires and an elite band of Vamps (Black Dagger Brotherhood - BDB) fight them to protect the dwindling Vampire numbers from being made extinct.

The leader of the BDB is Wrath, the only pure bred Vampire left. Wrath is really the King of the Vamps but has been avoiding that role as he deems himself not worthy.

Vamps are like humans until they reach 25 - when they go through the 'Change' which is a hard process that not all survive. The 'Change' is even harder for half breeds (part human/part Vamp) to make it through.

Darius (one of the BDB) has a half breed daughter Beth who is nearing the 'Change' and he asks Wrath to help her make it through. Wrath, ever the loner, initially refuses. But something happens that makes him change his mind.

When Wrath meets Beth he falls in love. He needs to help her survive the 'Change', the Slayers trying to kill them and to understand the new life she will have to live.

This is a really good book, revealing the hidden depths to Wrath and the Brotherhood, their fight for survival as well as the love story that emerges. Like it so much that I have ordered the rest of the series and can't wait to read the stories for the rest of the BDB members!!
